Who We Are

logosOver eight years ago, a group of concerned community residents came together to discuss the possibility of opening a community-based recreation center for the residents south of Fish Creek Provincial Park. "Many had tried in the past and many had failed" was a familiar phrase heard by this group. Undaunted, this group persevered and the South Fish Creek Recreation Association (SFCRA) was formed as a not-for-profit umbrella association from the following associations.

  • Shawnee Slopes / Evergreen Community Association
  • Somerset/Bridlewood Community Association
  • Midnapore Hockey Assoociation
  • Mid Sun Community Association
  • Millrise Community Association
  • Shaw Meadows Hockey Association
  • Shawnessy Community Association
  • Axeman/Sabrecats Lacrosse Association
  • South Fish Creek Basketball Association
  • City of Calgary and
  • Members at large from the community
  • Calgary Colts
  • Calgary Buffs

Collectively this group provides representation on the SFCRA’s Board of Directors.

The South Fish Creek Recreation Association (SFCRA) is very proud to be the inaugural operators of the gymnasium, meeting room and twin arena components at the South Fish Creek Complex.

We are proud to have reached this stage of our operation and we reconfirm our commitment to our respective organizations, Alliance Partners and community residents that we will work just as hard as ever achieving our common goals and objectives.

The twin arenas at the South Fish Creek Complex opened to the public in January 2001 and have been providing recreational and educational opportunities to the community at a feverish pace since. One year after the opening of the arenas, we opened our 6000 square foot gymnasium. Through a unique and collaborative effort with one of our Partner, the Calgary Catholic School district, we are able to utilize the Bishop O'Bryne High School gymnasiums when they are not used by the school. This additional gymnasium space allows us to better serve the recreational needs of the community.

The SFCRA offers a complete range of recreational programs to the citizens of Calgary. To date, the community has benefited from a wide variety of structured and unstructured gym and ice programs, home schooling lessons, as well as sports, cooking, language and arts and crafts programs.

Additional services offered at the SFCRA include a full service sports medicine clinic operated by the Panther Sports Medicine.
